Moving? Tips For Packing Your Life

movingI love it when people I follow on Twitter have great information, but this “tweep” had such great info that I had to share. My twitter friend @dustinson, emailed me about his great ideas for packing his home. I’ve seen a LOT of people move, but never quite like this. Enjoy!

The Decluttering Process

One of the things I think that really helped was the decluttering process.  I parked the cars in the driveway and put about 10 pallets (free from local businesses) in my garage.  Each pallet had a label on it: kitchen, bedroom etc.
We spent a few months packing and organizing, it was really easy to first move out what we didn’t need.  Each room’s content was piled on the pallet and then I wrapped them tight with plastic wrap.
The night before we moved I went out to pick up a truck that had a lift on it and rented a pallet jack.  I was able to get the truck loaded with our first trip by myself.

Moving Day

On moving day my friends stopped over to the house and helped carry the heavy stuff: beds, dressers, couches.  We made a trip to the new house, filled the trucks contents in the garage and headed back to the old house for the next trip.  I left 4 guys at the new place to unload.  I didn’t need to be around to direct where each pallet needed to go.  We loaded up the last load at the old house and the guys at the new house had just finished up the previous load. That was SOOOOO much easier than trying to load a truck up with a lot of goofy little boxes.  Nobody was sitting around because of the people-clutter.
I think that the added benefit of our house being clutter free really helped the sale too (which was at a respectable profit).  Nobody really cares if there are cars in the driveway or if the garage is a mess.  They can look past that.  It is hard to look past a ton of wall-hangings and cluttered display cases.
Thanks Dustin!  I appreciate your addition, and maybe some new homeowners will try your style of moving.  You can follow Dustin on Twitter HERE.
