The holidays are wrapping up…time to take down your tree.  If it’s real, you’ll need to know how to dispose of it.  Hope this helps:

Des Moines:

Beginning December 26, 2008, City of Des Moines Solid Waste crews will pick up and dispose of discarded holiday trees. Again this year, each tree must have a “Compost It!®” yard waste sticker attached to it prior to pickup. “Compost It!®” stickers are available at area Dahl’s and Hy-Vee stores.

The Public Works Department estimates that sanitation crews will pick up over 20,000 trees following this holiday season. The trees will be picked up on your regularly scheduled collection days. Residents are asked to remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, plastic bags, and tree stands. The trees will be ground and turned into compost humus over the next several months.

For more information, email or call the Public Works Department’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at (515) 283-4950.

Waukee:

West Des Moines:

Johnston:

There will be a special yard waste collection in January to pick up holiday greenery. Pickup will occur on residents’ normal trash collection day as follows:

  • January 5th (Monday trash collection)
  • January 6th (Tuesday trash collection)

Additional yard waste will also be collected. All normal yard waste collection rules apply:

    • Items must be at the curb by 6:00 a.m.

    • Regular yard waste requires a Compost It! bag or a brown ‘Kraft-style’ bag with a $1.00 Compost It! sticker attached.

    • Christmas Trees require a $1.00 sticker (do not place trees in plastic bags).

    • All wires/decorations must be removed from wreaths and other greenery.

    • Tree debris must be securely bundled no longer than 48 inches and no wider than 18 inches in diameter with a ‘Compost It’ sticker attached.  Individual pieces cannot exceed two inches in diameter.

Urbandale:

Clive:

Attach a Compost It! sticker to the tree and it will be picked up on Thursday, January 10 or Friday, January 11, 2008.

Residents need to “de-trim” their trees. Ornaments, tinsel, tree stands, and other decorations should be removed from trees before placing them at the curb.  Trees that have been placed in plastic bags will not be collected. Wreaths are also not accepted.
